Hull City have embarked on one of the busiest recruitment drives in English football, committing approximately €170 million to 13 new arrivals as they overhaul their squad.
The Tigers have cast their net wide. Nobel Mendy arrives from Rayo Vallecano for €23.4m, while Olympiacos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis commanded a near-identical €23.3m. Union Berlin's Ilyas Ansah (€17m), Nice forward Mohamed Ali Cho (€15.2m), Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam (€15.2m) and another Olympiacos recruit, Christos Mouzakitis (€15m), round out the headline deals.
Seven more signings follow at undisclosed fees, suggesting the actual outlay may climb higher still. The scale of investment is unusual for a side outside the top flight, though Hull have demonstrated ambition under their ownership before.
Spread across positions
The spending covers almost every area. Two goalkeepers, multiple midfielders, wide forwards and centre-backs have all been brought in. Whether that breadth translates into cohesion on the pitch remains the question mark hanging over such a scattergun approach.
Cho, 23, arrives with Ligue 1 pedigree and pace to burn. Iroegbunam, 21, offers Premier League experience despite his age. Mendy and Ansah bring physicality from Spain and Germany respectively. The Greek duo, Tzolakis and Mouzakitis, represent a clear scouting pattern.
Hull now face the task of integrating 13 new faces into a functioning team. The chequebook has been loud; results will determine whether the strategy was wisdom or waste.
