Three goals a game: Global football's summer scoring surge in numbers

The last 30 hours delivered 302 goals across 95 tracked matches, with just 41% ending in clean sheets.

Football has been generous this weekend. Across 95 matches in the past day and a half, 302 goals have been registered, an average of 3.18 per fixture. Clean sheets, by contrast, have become a relative luxury: only 39 games (41%) saw a side keep one.

The spike reflects the global calendar at this point in the year. Friendlies dominate the schedule, defences are still being drilled, and managers are rotating heavily. The result is entertainment weighted heavily toward attack.

When the floodgates open

De Graafschap and SC Telstar combined for nine goals in a Dutch friendly that finished 3-6, the highest-scoring contest of the period. Not far behind, Sokół Kleczew put seven past Unia Swarzędz without reply, the widest margin recorded. Both matches underline the pattern: pre-season is seldom a time for caution.

The numbers also highlight how rare it has become to see a 0-0 or a 1-0 grind. With more than three goals per game on average, neutral fans have had plenty to watch. Defensive coaches, meanwhile, have had plenty to address.

What it means

These figures offer a snapshot of football in flux. Squads are being tested, tactics refined, and fitness built. Goals come easier when the intensity is developmental rather than competitive. Whether the trend continues once leagues resume in earnest remains to be seen, but for now, the game is wide open.
