Uriel Antuna did everything except score or assist. The Pumas UNAM forward registered eight key passes in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Club Necaxa, carving open the visiting defence repeatedly without reward. Not one of his deliveries resulted in a goal.
The 26-year-old completed 22 of 30 passes and earned an 8.2 match rating despite the frustration of seeing chance after chance go begging. His creative output dwarfed anything else on the pitch at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, yet Pumas could not capitalise on the service.
Quality Without End Product
Eight key passes in a single match is rare in any competition. Antuna found pockets of space, threaded balls through tight channels, and delivered crosses into dangerous areas. The data shows he was operating at an elite level, but football does not always respect the creator. Finishing, as Pumas discovered, is a separate craft.
The result leaves both sides searching for consistency in the Liga MX Apertura. For Antuna, it was a personal showcase that will register nowhere in the assist column. He can only hope his teammates develop sharper instincts in front of goal, because the supply line is clearly functioning.
